Donald C. Thompson, 76, of Honesdale, our loving husband and father passed away at home surrounded by his family on August 9, 2011. Don is survived by his beloved wife, the former Martha Mowry. They recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. Don was born on October 9, 1934 in Scranton, PA, he was the son of the late Harley M. and Helen Mae Burdick Thompson. He was raised in Lakewood, Pa and attended Houghton College, NY where he met his wife and where he received his BA degree in Sociology and Psychology. Don and Martha then moved to Buffalo, NY where he received his MSS degree from the University of Buffalo. He moved to Philadelphia and became the director of the Presbyterian Children's Village. The family came to Honesdale in 1969 and Don became the Executive Director of the Wayne County Children and Youth Services. He held this position until his retirement in 1997. Don was a very active sports official in PIAA and ASA softball for many years. Don was instrumental in starting both the Big Brother & Big Sister programs and the Human Resource Center of Wayne County. He is also survived by his step mother, Lorna Thompson; his children, Lori Bunting and her husband Ray of Mountville, SC, Phil Thompson and his wife Debbie of Beach Lake, and Bruce Thompson and his wife Kerry of Honesdale; thirteen grandchildren, Joe, Valerie and the late Andrew Bunting, Pam Etter and her husband Brian, Craig Thompson and his wife Jessica, Stephanie and Natalie Thompson, Caleb and Bruce Thompson, Emily Derrick and her husband John, Mike and Catherine Rumain; great-granddaughter, Brynn Derrick. He was a faithful member of the Tabernacle Bible Church and Gideon's International. A Memorial Service will be held at the Tabernacle Bible Church, 455 Grove Street, Honesdale on Saturday, August 13, 2011 at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Dr. Richard Gregory officiating. Friends may visit the Tabernacle Bible Church on Friday, August 12 from 6:00-8:00 PM and Saturday from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. Interment: Willow View Cemetery, Clifford. Memorial contributions can be made to the Tabernacle Bible Church, 455 Grove Street, Honesdale, Pa 18431. Arrangements are attended by the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral Home 1228 North Main Street, Honesdale, PA 18431.
