Carmelo (Carl) Astacio January 27, 2015Carmelo Astacio, 82, of Honesdale, very peacefully went home to be with the lord while surrounded by his family on January 27, 2016. Carmelo was born June 4, 1933 in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico., and the son of Atilano and Bernabella Astacio and raised by his sister Alberta and Oscar Zavala in Brooklyn, N.Y. During the Korean War, he served in the United States Air Force as a radar operator and was stationed in South Africa. His service in the Air Force enabled him to get his education through the G.I. Bill. He was a resident of Farmingville, NY where for many years he was a Postal Carrier until retiring. While living in Farmingville he formed and ran as the president a youth baseball league which his son and many children participated in. After retiring he and his wife Nancy moved to Montrose, Pennsylvania where they belonged and worked at the Montrose Bible Conference. Married to his lifelong love, Nancy (Kaffka), they traveled to many places. They were married for 53 years and had a son. He was a Baptist and had strong faith in the lord. He was a member of Stanfordville Baptist Church for nearly 20 years until moving to Honesdale, Pennsylvania. While residing in Montrose Pennsylvania, he would frequent the local McDonald's and enjoy his senior decaf and chicken snack wrap sandwich. He spent a lot of time taking his grandchildren their to play and sitting and having coffee with his friends. Everybody knew him and loved him. He was a friendly smile wherever he went. He was a dedicated husband, the best father you could ever wish for and an extremely proud grandfather and great grandfather. He was preceded in death by siblings; Carmen Maria, Bertha, Jorge, and Felix. Also preceded by his companion cat Kobe and grand-dog Neo. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Nancy Astacio of Honesdale, PA, son and special daughter in law Carl and Brandy Astacio of Springville, PA, Granddaughter Kristy and her husband Michael and great granddaughter Scarlett Pavlichko, Grandson Nicholas and great granddaughter Victoria Donero, Granddaughter Breanna Madison Astacio, and Grandson Joshua Chase Astacio, all of Springville, Pennsylvania. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and special grand-dog Rosie whom he loved dearly. Funeral services will be held Friday, February 5, 2016 at 4:00 pm, at Arthur A. Bryant Funeral Home, 1228 North Main Street, Honesdale, PA 18431. Services will be followed by a Military Honor Guard. Visitation will be on Friday, February 5, 2016 from 2:00-4:00pm at the funeral home. A special thank you to the nurses at Ellen Memorial, Dr Cruse at Wayne Memorial, Special Hospice Nurse Charlene Whitmore, and a very special thank you to Nurse Ashley Compton from Wayne Memorial Hospital for being there with us all that night.
