Freda Elizabeth Avery A Nurse, but So Much More... Freda Elizabeth Avery, beloved mother and grandmother, dedicated nurse and a former outstanding employee of Wayne Memorial Hospital, passed away peacefully at her home August 11, 2016. She had just celebrated her 85th birthday with (surrounded by) her children and grandchildren. Born July 30, 1931 in Honesdale, PA, to the late Rudolph and Elizabeth Hafner Neugebauer, she lived in Wayne County her entire life. Freda was previously married to Frank Avery of Beach Lake. Freda graduated from the Binghamton City Hospital School of Nursing in September 1952 and worked at Wayne Memorial Hospital for over 45 years, where she had been feted numerous times for a lifetime of devoted service. Most of her years there were spent in the maternity department helping expectant mothers deliver their babies with a kind, competent and caring demeanor. Often on the street, in the supermarket, or at a local restaurant, she would be stopped and thanked for her compassion and kind-heartedness, she was appreciated by so many. Besides bringing up five children of her own while working full time, Freda also gave back to the community by being an avid animal lover, a generous donor to the less fortunate, and a true friend to all who were a part of her life. Always on the go, Freda loved nothing more than a night out with her best friend Evelyn Yunko. Back in the day, the two could be seen out rollicking the night away dancing to their favorite polka. The greatest pleasures for Freda were the simple things: sharing a good meal with her children, eating and laughing and, of course, demanding to pay the check, traveling with her son Lyle on numerous bus trips, or sitting in church waiting for the hymns to begin. She was respected and loved by those who knew her well. Her closest friends and family will miss her feisty, sassy disposition. Fiercely independent, Freda had a work ethic and generous spirit that was unparalleled..... we will all miss our Grandma Freda tremendously. Freda is survived by her five children: daughter Sharon Romaniello and husband Jim of Lake Ariel; son Lyle Avery and wife Nancy of Beach Lake; Linda Snodgrass and husband John of Huntingtown, MD; Cindy Freund and husband Steve of Lake Forest, IL and Holly Avery of Maple Grove, MN; seven grandchildren: Jake, Devon, Nash, Erik, Greg, Sean, and Brandon, and two great grandchildren : Leif and Hazel. Freda is preceded in death by her brothers Rudolph and Herman Neugebauer, and sister Betty Carpenter, and her best buddy in the world, her cat Buffy. She is survived by sisters Joan Briedenstein and Carol Kuntz and nephew Ronnie Neugebauer of Aberdeen, MD, and many nieces and nephews A Celebration of Life service will be held at the Hamlin Assembly of God Saturday, September 10, 2016, at 11 o'clock am. All are most welcome and encouraged to come and celebrate Freda's life. Arrangements are attended by the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral Home 1228 Main Street, Honesdale, Pa
