Emily Sluman Hitty
Emily Hitty, 93, longtime resident of Beach Lake, died peacefully Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Wayne Woodlands Manor, Waymart. Her husband of 30 years, Victor Hitty, passed away on December 7, 1995.
Born on a Smith Hill farm December 21, 1923, she was the fourth of seven daughters of the late Ira Burton and Esther Stephens Sluman. She graduated from Honesdale High School and Wayne Commercial School. Emily was a 50 year member of the Beach Lake United Methodist Church remaining active into her later years. She held several positions in accounts payable at local organizations and was best known and recognized as the drive-thru bank teller at the former Farmers & Merchants Bank, Honesdale, which she thoroughly enjoyed for 16 years, retiring in 1988.
Emily enjoyed spending time with her long term friends playing cards and dining out. She was a member and former treasurer of the Beach Lake Seniors and looked forward to Bingo and socializing. She loved being outdoors: walking, gardening, and even raking leaves and shoveling snow.
Surviving are one sister, Mary Fritz, Melbourne, Fl; brother in law, John Burlage, Philadelphia; grandchildren, Jennifer Swendsen, Milanville; Brenda and Joseph Koscuik, South Caanan and great grandchildren, Julia and Amelia Koscuik and many nieces and nephews including Sara Noble DeMauro and husband Charles Lipsmeyer and son Blake who spent much time being in her company, sharing holidays, and attending to her needs.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Susan LaTourette Swendsen and son in law Gary Swendsen; sisters, Wilma Burlage, Ruth and husband Ed Haas, Frances Jones, Grace and husband Arthur Noble and infant sister Vera Sluman; brother in law Frederick Fritz; and nephew Martin Haas and Spencer Fritz.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Wayne Woodlands and Highland Physicians for all of their care and compassion.
Friends may call on Friday, February 3, 2017 from 10:00-11:00 am at the Beach Lake United Methodist Church, Milanville Road. A memorial service will follow on Friday at 11:00 AM at the church.
Interment will be in the Beach Lake Cemetery at a later date.
