Elwood “Larry” Miller Obituary

Elwood Lawrence Miller, Jr. (Larry), born on September 21, 1965, in Easton, PA, passed quietly at Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton, PA, on the morning of October 1, 2025. His passing marked the end of a long, hard-fought battle against kidney and heart failure.

Larry said his goodbyes to his brother and sister, as well as his dear friend, Robin. “I lived a good life, didn’t I, kiddo?” were some of his last words. He did. Larry grew up on his grandparents’ farm in Brodheadsville, PA, where he learned about hunting, farming, mechanics, and – most importantly – John Deere tractors, working alongside his father and grandfather.

Larry had a strong work ethic, a larger-than-life personality, and an even bigger heart. A true jack of all trades, he could fix anything. He was an entrepreneur who was always developing his next idea. A longtime resident of Wayne County, PA, he spent much of his life working between Hawley and Honesdale. Larry was the oldest of four children. He married Marcy Degroat and helped raise her two sons. Above all, he was a loving, dedicated son, brother, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. His trademark bear hugs will be forever remembered, and missed greatly.

Larry battled several chronic health conditions valiantly. Due to complications he suffered from a car accident in his youth, he was unable to receive a life-saving heart and kidney transplant. His family would like to acknowledge and thank the many healthcare workers, doctors, friends, and caregivers who supported him along his journey. Our endless gratitude goes out to Cherie, Karen, Robin, Barb, Mike, Dr. Prior, Dr. Getts, Dr. Smith, and the staff of Davita at Montage.

Larry was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Lawrence and Ruth Miller; his maternal grandparents, Earl and Marion Hopper; his sister, Jenyenne Miller; and his ex-wife, Marcy Miller.

Larry is survived by his parents, Elwood Miller, Sr. and Margaret Miller; his stepmother, Kathy Miller; his brother and sister-in-law, Eric and Jessica Miller; his brother-in-law and sister, Alexander and Janea Lakis; his stepsons, Clinton David Degroat and Michael Degroat, along with their wives and families; his eight nieces and nephews: Dylan Miller, Brianna Miller, Kory Gschwend, Ethan Miller, Kyle Gschwend, Kain Lakis, Kaelynn Miller, and Eric Miller, Jr.; his great-nephew, Lucas Hernandez; and his future nephew, Marvin Hernandez.

When asked how Larry wanted to be remembered, he said, “I like my coffee black and strong, my whiskey cold, and my women naked. I lived hard, I played hard, and I died well. My wish for the future is for my friends and family to be happy.”

Larry’s family will host a celebration of life at a date yet to be determined, as he did not wish to have a funeral service. In lieu of flowers, his family is asking that you honor Larry’s memory with a donation to a charity of your choice.
