It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jane Woodel Tietjen. Jane was a long-time resident of Honesdale, PA, and spent her final days at Wayne Woodlands Manor in Waymart, PA. She passed away on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at the age of 82. Jane’s legacy lives on in her family, including her three children – Robert Tietjen (Deborah), Susan Hanson (Corey), and David Tietjen – and seven grandchildren: Benjamin, Karli, Devin, Kyle, Kaitlyn, Finn, and Remy. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, her sisters-in-law and other extended family. Jane was preceded in death by her brother Lenoard Woodel, her sister Joyce Arden Godbey, her brother-in-law Thomas Godbey, her former husband George W. Tietjen and her brother-in-law John C. Tietjen. Jane lived a full life. She grew up spending summers enjoying Greenwood Lake, NY, where she was an avid water skier. Jane once circled the lake performing a headstand on a boogie board. To our knowledge, that feat has never been equaled (or even attempted).Jane graduated from Russell Sage College in Troy, NY, with a degree in Physical Education, which she taught for several years at schools in Washington, DC and on Long Island, NY. She then went on to assemble an eclectic work history, with stints as a hostess, manager of a bookstore/art studio, and home daycare operator. She also volunteered for many years with the Wayne Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Jane enjoyed many different pastimes, from music (she was a beautiful piano player and sang in the Wayne Choralaires) to reading and art. She was also an accomplished horse rider who enjoyed trail riding at the family farm and attending horse shows with at least one of her children. Jane was a world-class Christmas shopper, who (apparently) worked full-time to purchase the literal avalanche of presents that would appear on Christmas morning….to the later chagrin of her children, who would struggle to match the effort for their own offspring. Jane’s main passion, however, was her children, where she created an environment of independence and support. She was well known for playing host and surrogate mother to a revolving cast of her children’s friends, acquaintances, friends of friends, as well as various cats, who slept, ate (and other things) at her home on Overlook Avenue. Nobody was refused a bed, a meal, or a sympathetic ear. Though occasionally unorthodox, Jane successfully raised three gainfully employed children and helped raise several grandchildren (none of whom, to date, have required bail money).Although Jane’s health declined in her later years, nothing could dim her spirit or her smile. She will be missed. In keeping with Jane’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held at a later date for family and friends to gather, honor and remember her. Details will be announced when available. Donations in Jane’s name may also be made to the Dessin Animal Shelter, which she frequented when her collection of cats ran low.
