Elizabeth Marion Hazen, 48, of Equinunk, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, June 14, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.

She is survived by her husband, James Hazen, with whom she would have celebrated 30 years of marriage with on July 6, after 32 years together. They were married July 6, 1996, and built a life together rooted in love, hard work, loyalty, and family.

Born February 19, 1978, in Valley Stream, New York, Liz was the beloved daughter of Elizabeth Susan Knoerzer Muller of Callicoon, New York, and the late Edward Harry Muller.

Liz graduated from Delaware Valley High School and later earned an Associate’s Degree from Lackawanna Community College. She dedicated 27 years to Honesdale National Bank, starting off as a teller and working her way up through determination and intelligence to become Assistant Vice President and Loan Review Officer. Not many people love their job, but Liz loved what she did and loved who she worked with so much. She loved a challenge, especially when numbers were involved, and was incredibly smart, hard-headed, and determined in all the best ways.

Liz had a passion for learning and appreciated life’s simple joys. She took her time at museums and zoos to soak in every detail and learn something new, which always drove her daughter crazy who lacked patience. She was a gifted cook and baker whose kitchen became very busy during Christmas time. Entire weekends were spent baking cookies and assembling trays for neighbors, family, local businesses her husband worked with, and anyone lucky enough to be on her list.

She found joy in gardening, whether tending to her vegetable garden and generously giving away extra produce to family and friends, or carefully maintaining her beloved flower beds that were truly her pride and joy. She especially loved building rock walls around her gardens, though the occasional garter snake usually required calling in her husband or children for rescue, as she never quite found the courage to deal with them herself.

Liz also had a deep love for motorcycles and was a proud member of the H.O.G.

Honesdale Chapter, enjoying countless rides with her husband despite never quite mastering how to ride a bike herself — though both her husband and daughter tried many times to teach her, they failed miserably.

A dreamer at heart, Liz spent nearly 20 years writing a book series she hoped one day to publish. She poured pieces of herself into those stories, never giving up on the dream of sharing them with the world one day.

Though Liz loved many things, nothing mattered more to her than the people she loved.

She was an incredible wife to James. They met while working at the Villa Roma, and she often said, “When you know, you know,” and she knew with him. Their nearly 30 years together were not always easy, but they built something beautiful through hard work and love. Liz helped James start Hazen Lawn Creations & Services LLC in the early 2000s and continued supporting him through every season of life, always proud of everything they built together.

Liz was an extraordinary mother who poured her whole heart into her children. No distance ever kept her from showing up. Whether helping plan a virtual baby shower while her daughter was stationed overseas in Belgium, or driving three hours — despite hating the drive — just to spend time with her son, she never stopped showing up for the people she loved.

She adored her granddaughter, Charlotte, and loved being a grandmother. Charlotte calls her Gigi and the bond they shared was truly so special. Liz always told Katrina when she was younger that she was strict with her children so she could spoil her grandchildren. That’s what she did. Charlotte only ever knew an endless supply of unconditional love from her Gigi. She loved Charlotte so much. She flew out to Belgium for the birth and stayed with her daughter to take care of her for 2 weeks. That’s the kind of mother and grandmother she was.

She treasured time with her siblings, sharing laughter and stories from childhood with her brothers, Ted and Erik, and sister, Weeze. She also loved trips to Florida to drink wine in the pool with her sister-in-law Mandie, who was more like a sister than an in-law.

She deeply loved her mother and would often keep her on the phone as long as possible, despite knowing full well her mother preferred short phone calls.

Liz was selfless in every sense of the word. She was often the last one to eat, the last one to sleep, and the last one inside, always making sure everyone else was cared for first. She spent her life loving others fiercely and quietly giving pieces of herself to the people she loved most.

Anyone who knew Liz knew how deeply she loved dogs, though somehow, they always seemed to choose James — until October of 2022, when she rescued Willow. Willow became fiercely loyal to Liz, staying by her side through everything and remaining close until the very end. Liz loved training Willow, asking her daughter for tips, playing ball with her outside, and cuddling on the couch together.

Liz will be remembered for her intelligence, stubbornness, positivity, humor, generosity, loyalty, and the way she loved with her whole heart. She was the kind of person who made people feel cared for, fed, welcomed, and deeply loved.

In addition to her husband, James, and mother, Elizabeth, she is survived by her son, Christopher Hazen of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; daughter, Katrina Bryant, and husband, Christopher Bryant, currently stationed at Chièvres Air Base, Belgium; beloved granddaughter, Charlotte Bryant; siblings Eva “Weeze” Muller, Edward “Ted” Muller, and Erik Muller; along with many extended family members and dear friends who will miss her deeply.

At Liz’s request, there will be no formal services.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
