David Gordon Thomas, 81, of Honesdale passed away Sunday, July 12, 2026 at his home. He is preceded in death by his wife Cheryl (Pickenheim) Thomas, of 54 years, who passed away April 9, 2022.

David is survived by his son Jeffrey Thomas and his wife Christine of Hyde Park, NY and their children Alex and Abby, his daughter Jennifer Thomas and her husband James of Grafton, MA and their children Luke, Matthew and Eleanor Thomas. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Born December 7, 1944 in Honesdale, he was the son of the late Ellis and Eleanor (Rude) Thomas. He is preceded in death by his sister Arlene Perri and her husband Donald Perri, and his brother Ellis Jr who passed as a young child.

David graduated from Forest City Joint High School and he received a Bachelors of Science degree in secondary education with a major in mathematics from East Stroudsburg State College in 1966. David taught mathematics and oversaw the Math department at Wappingers Junior High for 34 years.

David retired to his family farm in Honesdale with Cheryl in 2000. They opened an antique store and travelled extensively in both the United States and in Europe.

He was a member of the Bethany Community Church North, the Lions Club, served as a Mount Pleasant township auditor for over 25 years and was President of Green Grove Cemetery Association. David loved playing the piano, meeting up with his teaching pals, doing crossword puzzles, and giving the grandkids tractor rides when they were small. He was a life long learner who was always interested in learning new things about history or just the people around him. He was kind and generous and loved to help.

He cherished the times when his family gathered each year for the fair, submitting many entries together and making lasting memories. He had a special talent for creating beautiful flower arraignments. Nothing brought him more happiness than his children and grandchildren, who were the greatest joy of his life.

A memorial service will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, August 8th at the Bethany Community Church North. There will be a visitation at the church from 11:00 am to 12:00 noon on August 8, 2026.

Private interment will be in Green Grove Cemetery, Pleasant Mount.
