Herbert J. Ashley, 83 of Tyler Hill, PA, died at home on Tuesday, January 18, 2011 after an illness. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, the former Shirley Johnson. Born on March 13, 1927 in Plainfield, NJ, he was the son of the late Fred and Ann (Scheelan) Ashley. He joined the United States Army at age 17, and served during World War II. Herb later attended the University of Miami and University of Rutgers. He met Shirley in college, and they married soon after graduation. Herb entered the automobile business and eventually owned and operated four dealerships with his four sons. In 1986, he moved to Tyler Hill and retired from the business the following year. Herb enjoyed the remaining years in Tyler Hill with family and friends. He was a member of the Bay Head Yacht Club, served as a councilman for Bay Head, and also served on the Board of Education. He is also survived by four sons: Paul Ashley and his wife Peg, of Florida, Scott Ashley and his wife Jennifer, of Tyler Hill, Mark Ashley and his wife Rochel, of New Jersey, and Matthew Ashley and his wife Fran of Tyler Hill; sixteen grandchildren: Tom, and his wife Carrie, Lauren, and her husband Brian, PJ and his wife Jess, Chris, and his wife Allison, Ian, and his companion Jess, Leigh Anne and her husband Matt, Matt, Danna and her husband John, Chale, Mark and his wife Jamie, Emily, Brad, Kristen, Alex, Allison, and Tyler; five great-grandchildren: Cole, Lila, Amelia, Henry, and Ashton; and three more great-grandchildren expected. Funeral Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are attended by the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral Home 1228 North Main Street, Honesdale, PA 18431.
