Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Irene Tegeler, 85, passed away peacefully Monday, January 27, 2014 at the James G. Johnston Nursing Home in Johnson City, NY. Born in Honesdale, she was the youngest of C.L. and Mary Vail Tegeler. Along with her siblings, Irene was known in her youth as one the "Tegeler Terrors". Irene graduated from Damascus High School and Wayne Commercial School. She raised her family in Binghamton NY before moving to Maine and then returning to Honesdale for nineteen years. Ultimately her health led her to assisted living near her family in Binghamton. In addition to her parents C.L. and Mary Vail Tegeler, she was preceded in death by an infant sister Betty, her brothers Fred Tegeler of Narrowsburg NY, Otto Tegeler of Damascus and her sister, Alice Jenkins of Lake Ariel. She is survived by her sister, Evelyn (Chee Chee) Glatz of Maine, three children, Allan Vanek of Binghamton NY, Marie Travis and husband Rick of Hallstead PA, and Rita Eichman and husband David of Harrisburg PA. Irene was Nana to seven grandchildren: Mark Maga, Paul Travis, Kelly Hubble and her husband Mic, Charlie Eichman and his wife Annie, Henry, Maddie and Anna Eichman. Irene had three great grandchildren, Mica, Tatum and Hye Hubble, and was looking forward to a great granddaughter with the birth of Charlie and Annie's first child in May. Irene enjoyed the time spent with her cousins, nieces and nephews at the annual Tegeler Family reunion. She is survived also by several dear friends, including Ann Horst, Pat Spoor, Liz Kromko, and the Sisters of St. Mary of Namur, especially Sister Margaret and Sister Mary Agnes. While living in Honesdale, Irene was a member of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Parish and a volunteer with the Damascus Historical Society. Her faith, sense of humor, outgoing and spirited personality led her to dear friends throughout her life. She loved to sing and cherished the friendships she formed with Sweet Adelines during her years in Maine and the Wayne Choralaires in Honesdale. She loved beer. She hated cats. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the United Methodist Homes' Hilltop Campus, 286 Deyo Hill Road, Johnson City, NY 13790. A Viewing will be held on Monday, February 3 from 10:00-11:30 am at the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral Home, 1228 Main St. Honesdale PA, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary Magdalen Church, 414 Church St. Honesdale, PA
