Carl W. Henry of Honesdale, PA passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, July 6, 2014. His wife Cynthia "Cindy" Robinson Henry survives him. The couple married July 10, 1971 in the First Presbyterian Church in Honesdale. Born in Newport, PA on August 8, 1932, he was the son of the late Charles D. Sr. and Elsie Hutzley Henry. He graduated from Tunkhannock High School in 1950. Carl served the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1955, spending two and a half years of his duty in Japan. Following his service to his country he enrolled at Penn State University in 1955 and graduated with B.S. degree in Agriculture/Education in 1959. He spent the first two years of his teaching career as an agriculture teacher at Honesdale High School before switching to teach various high school science classes. During this time he also coached girls and boys volleyball, girls softball and founded the girls track and field program in 1966. When the Wayne Highlands Middle School opened in 1975 he moved there and taught seventh grade science until his retirement in June 1993. Carl was also a member of several bowling teams in the 1960's and 1970's winning many trophies including the high game of 279 in the Tri-State League for 1977-1978. His other interests were traveling with his family, and golfing and gardening. Carl was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Honesdale where he served as a trustee, deacon and elder. He spent many hours at church gardening and working at church functions where he thoroughly enjoyed serving his Lord. He also had a lifetime membership in the Penn State Alumni Association and closely followed the Nittany Lions. In addition to his wife, Carl was survived by one son: Christopher C. Henry of Cusseta, Alabama and three daughters: Becky Hunt and her husband Richard of Lansdale, PA; Cathy Johnson and her husband John of Honesdale, PA; the Rev. Alice Bonham and her husband Robert of Bangor, PA; eight grandchildren: William Hunt, Matthew Hunt, Eric Jacobsen, Michelle Jacobsen Lyons, John Johnson, Gerald Johnson, Trevor Johnson, and Jessica Bonham; two great-grandchildren; Jeremy Jacobsen and Chatham Lyons. Other survivors include sisters: Betty Lou Furman and husband Rev. Edward of Pittston, PA; Elsie Fae Hamilton of Whoolrich, PA; Ruth Comfort and husband Webb of Vestal, N.Y.; Katharine Dymond and husband Albert of Tunkhannock, PA; sisters-in-law: Lenore Henry of Bethlehem, PA; Nancy Henry of Unity, Maine; Joan Green and husband Dennis of Bethany, Pa. Many nieces and nephews including a special nephew, Justin Green, who was like a second son to his uncle Carl, also survive him. Carl was predeceased by his sister Clara Mae Witter and brothers Charles D. Henry, Jr. and Walter D. Henry and brothers-in-law Irving Witter and James Hamilton. In accordance with Carl's wishes visitation will take place at the First Presbyterian Church in Honesdale on Friday, July 11, 2014 from 9 A.M. to 11 A.M. with a funeral service immediately following officiated by Rev. Michael Lyle. Interment will be in the Glen Dyberry Cemetery in Honesdale. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be sent to the Honesdale Emergency Pantry, Box 14, Honesdale, PA.
