Obituary of Warren M. Grim

Warren Manning Grim, of Hemlock Farms, passed away on Monday, September 15, 2014 following an illness, at the Newton Medical Center, New Jersey. He was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania on August 8, 1923 the son of Warren and Helen Manning Grim. His grandparents lived in Bethany, PA, where he spent his summers. Warren served in the Army during World War II in Europe. He arrived at Utah Beach shortly after the invasion. During his time in the service, he was fortunate in meeting General Patton. He received his music teaching degree from West Chester State College and graduate degrees from Lehigh University and Columbia University. Warren was a multi-talented musician, playing the violin, string bass, piano and was particularly accomplished on the trumpet. He was an inspiration to his many students when he taught music for 38 years in schools in Bucks County and Quakertown in Pennsylvania and in Newtown, Pittman and Ridgewood New Jersey. His quiet ways endeared him to his students, many of whom went on to careers in music. He was the conductor for the Ridgewood Village Band. He performed for ten years with the Northeast Band at Lake Placid which was conducted by the former director of the US Air Force Band. Warren received an honorary medal from the West Point Military Band. He also was fortunate to perform at Carnegie Hall. After his retirement, he and his wife, Elisa, served as tour guides for trips to the music capitals of Europe. He loved Vermont and went there every summer or fall when they were not in Florida. They spent their winters in Florida where he belonged to the Confederate Band of St Augustine. He was referred to as their best trumpet player, even if he was a "Yankee." Warren was a member of the board of directors of the Wayne County Creative Arts Council, where his invaluable guidance helped lead the group through challenging times. He and Elisa were a fixture in the front row for the summer concerts in Honesdale's Central Park. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Elisa whom he called his "queen," his sister Helen and her husband Chuck Rhinebrecht, and many nieces and nephews A memorial service was held on September 22, 2014 at the Central United Methodist Church in Honesdale, PA. Contributions may be made to the Ancient City Baptist Church, 27 Sevilla Street, St Augustine, FL 32080. "Mourn that he is gone - rejoice forever that he was."
