Betty M. Vannatta Hartman passed away at home surrounded by family March 5, 2021. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Orvis S. Hartman, Sr. Betty was born at home in Milanville, Pa on July 7, 1931.She was the daughter of the late Harold and Helen Card Vannatta. Betty graduated from Damascus School in 1948 where she played women's softball and basketball, occasionally filling in on the boy's basketball team. While in high school she watched for low flying airplanes during wartime in the Calkins area. Prior to marriage, she worked at Camp Swago and at a boarding house at Kenoza Lake. Betty worked in Long Island as a nanny for Dr. Sherwin and as a nurse's aide in the men's surgical ward of the Brooklyn Hospital,. During her married life she was an active member in the National Farmers Organization, the Ace Snowmobile Club, the Torrey Enterprise Grange, the Wayne Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and the Calkins Ladies Aide. Betty served as the Oregon Tax Collector for 16 years and the inspector of election for Oregon Township for 20 years. Her love of flowers and gardening was surely inherited from her father who was an avid gardener. Betty's home was the hub for many family gatherings that will be forever etched in our hearts. She is survived by three daughters and a son, Gail Hartman and fiancé Ronald Dice of Perry, FL, Jo Avery and her husband Bruce of Honesdale, Judith Collins and her husband Grant of Honesdale, and Orvis Hartman Jr and his wife Jayme of Tucson, AZ; a sister, Mary Priebe and her husband Richard; brothers, John Vannatta and his wife Pat and Harold Vannatta Jr and his wife Gabriel; 13 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by a brother, Norman Vannatta, a sister, Martha (Shirley) Vannatta Hiller, and a daughter, Robin Lori who died at birth. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 13, 2021 at the Calkins Baptist Family Center at 11:00 AM with a luncheon to follow at 12:30. Friends may visit before the service from 9:00-11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Calkins Baptist Church 527 Calkins Road Milanville, Pa 18443 or Enterprise Grange #1324 c/o Arline LaTourette 792 Torrey Road , Honesdale Pa 18431 or Wayne Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Arrangements are attended by the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral Home 1228 Main Street Honesdale, Pa.
