James Henry Dykhuizen of Honesdale, PA went to be with the Lord on June 2, 2012 after years of many health issues. Jim was born on August 21, 1927 in Bloomington, IN and attended school in Haddonfield, NJ graduating from Haddonfield Memorial High School in 1945. Jim attended Purdue University in Lafayette, IN for six months when he was drafted in the Army serving in Japan at the end of World War II. After serving in the Army, Jim returned to Purdue studying Civil Engineering. Jim worked for Grow Construction Company of NY, NY for most of his career building highway bridges on Palisades Interstate Parkway, Connecticut Parkway, and I-84. Then the company changed its name to Grow Tunneling and did water and sewage tunnels throughout New York City while we lived in Bergen County, NJ. After that Jim did a couple small hydroelectric projects in the Hudson Valley, NY. After moving to Honesdale, Pa Jim worked for Jenning Engineering where he commuted to Cleveland Ohio every week on a tunnel job in that city for three years as well as small tunnel job for Jenning Engineering in Poughkeepsie, NY.
Jim was active in church all his married life while raising a family of five children. Jim taught 5th Grade boys in Sunday School and was a Leader of Boys Brigade while living in NJ. Jim served as an Elder for several terms in the Honesdale Gospel Tabernacle Church, now named Tabernacle Bible Church of Honesdale. When the Tabernacle built their new church, Jim was project Manager/Chief Engineer to which he donated all his time and service to the project. Jim was a man of integrity and never compromised his values.
Jim is survived by his wife of 60 years Margaret (VanEerden) Dykhuizen, a brother George Dykhuizen and his wife Doris of Englewood, FL; one son Dale Dykhuizen and his wife Pam of Corning, NY; daughters, Marva Dykhuizen of Sterling, KS, Gwen and Van Silka of Northborough, MA, Margaret and Michael Robertson of Ocala, FL, and Nancy and Jack Olson of Shohola, PA; grandchildren, Brandy Dykhuizen, Lindsey and Matt Zackman, Brian and Matthew Silka, Chloe and Gordon Robertson, and Alexander, Timothy, Nathan and Benjamin Olson. Jim was predeceased by his parents Henry and Edith Dykhuizen and a sister, Ruth Ann Stevens.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 9, 2012 at 11:00 AM in the Tabernacle Bible Church, Grove Street, Honesdale with Pastor John Banks officiating. Friends may visit on Saturday at the church from 10:00 AM until the time of service.
Interment will be in the Girdland Cemetery.
