Obituary of Virgil L. Goble

Virgil Leland Goble 90, of 485 Willow Avenue Honesdale, passed away at home Tuesday night July 31st 2012, after an illness. He was born to Ida Bishop Goble and George A. Goble of Lakeville, PA on January 9th 1922. A veteran of WWII, he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1942 and trained as an anti-tank infantryman at Camp Phillips Kansas before entering combat in Northern France, Belgium and Germany. His company was attached to George S. Patton's 3rd Army when they made the long winter trek to rescue the surrounded Paratroops in the village of Bastogne in December 1944. After Germany's defeat in April 1945, his unit, the 94th Infantry Division remained for several months in Czechoslovakia as occupation forces. After that he returned home and reentered service with the U.S. Army and trained as a Military Policeman in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He was deployed to Shanghai, China providing local security, and supervising the movement of material from Shanghai to Kobe, Japan. After returning home he married Monica Rosceile Schwab of Honesdale, PA on November 9th1949. He had a love for fishing and hunting, and for playing country and western music on his guitar. He enjoyed playing and writing songs about our nation's heritage. He was a member of Honesdale VFW post 531 and supported numerous veterans' causes. Mr. Goble was an excellent machinist and worked for the Loomis Co. and for Yuba, in Honesdale and for Worthington Pump, and Chrysler Corp. in Eynon, Pa. He was very fond of his children and grandchildren and his dog Elvis. Virgil is survived by his wife Monica, their 7 children: Linda Roberts, Bonnie LeStrange, Kim Travis, Karen Goble, Jonathan Goble, James Goble and Amy Milovan; grandchildren: David Roberts, Robin Lukondi, Christian Roberts, Jeremy Roberts, Brett LeStrange, Sean LeStrange, Heather LeStrange, Michelle Travis, Chere' Tater, Caleb Goble, Isaac Goble, Sara Haney, Ashley Goble, and Jonah Milovan; great-grandchildren: Nichole Muntz, Brianna Smith, Celia Roberts, Andrew Lukondi, Vanessa Lukondi, Gavin Roberts, Bradon Roberts, Zachary Pierson, Seth LeStrange, Cole Hayes, Boaz Goble, Gage Goble, Nora Goble, Alexis Haney and Isaac Haney; great, great- grandchildren: Carley Muntz and Tarynn Smith. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Diabetes Foundation. There will be a graveside ceremony at the Methodist cemetery in Lakeville on Saturday August 4, 2012 at 11 a.m. with a memorial service to be held later.
