Obituary of Margaret A. Gamble
Please share a memory of Margaret to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Margaret Ann Gamble, affectionately known as "Peg," passed away peacefully in her home on December 2, 2024, at the age of 75. She endured the challenges of an unexpected stroke in May 2023 with remarkable strength and grace. Born on February 28, 1949, in Carbondale, PA, Peg was the beloved daughter of the late Stephen and Geraldine Gamble (née Odell). She was raised in Pleasant Mount, PA, before marrying and settling in Honesdale, PA, where she built a life centered on family, community, and service.
Peg was baptized at White's Valley United Methodist Church, where she was active in the Methodist Youth Fellowship. She shared a loving childhood with her siblings: Howard Gamble (deceased), Bonnie Raymond, Rick Gamble, Barbara Jane Gamble, and Gail Kresge. After moving to Honesdale, she became a member of the Honesdale Methodist Church, continuing her faith journey and commitment to her community.
Growing up on a farm instilled in Peg a strong work ethic and a love of rural life. She was an active participant in 4-H, earning the esteemed title of Dairy Queen. A graduate of Forest City High School, she pursued higher education at Marywood College and later transferred to the University of New Haven, earning a BS in Business Administration. In 1974, she achieved a Master's in Social Work from Marywood College. Peg often joked that this degree was her "back door" into the male-dominated business world of the 1970s. Her determination paid off as she became the Executive Director of the Area Agency on Aging, serving Wayne, Pike, and Monroe Counties. Among her many achievements, she organized the region's first transportation system for elderly and disabled individuals, leaving a lasting impact on her community.
After several years of balancing her career and motherhood, Peg chose to dedicate herself fully to raising her children, Wallace and Elizabeth. Her home became a hub of love and laughter, surrounded by friends like Patty Weniger, Janice Helms, Sharon Bermelin, and many others. Once her children were older, Peg returned to work in administrative roles, always prioritizing helping those in need.
Peg had a deep love of travel. In her younger years, she enjoyed trips to Maine and later, as a volunteer board member with the Housing Authority, she visited various states, alternating trips with each of her children. As her family grew, she broadened her horizons, traveling to ten Super Bowls, Italy, France, and beyond. Her final adventure was a memorable trip to Hawaii with her son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren.
Despite the challenges brought on by her stroke, Peg remained remarkably resilient and determined. Her spirit inspired everyone around her, while the kindness, care, and compassion of her devoted caregivers, neighbors and friends brought comfort and joy to her days, making every moment brighter.
Peg's greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Nuttycombe, and son-in-law Jason Parseghian of Glen Ridge, NJ; her son, Wallace Nuttycombe, and daughter-in-law Tracylnn Nuttycombe of Madison, NJ. Her cherished grandchildren, Jason Parseghian (16), Catherine Parseghian (13), Wallace Nuttycombe (11), and Arabella Nuttycombe (6), brought her immense pride and happiness.
Friends are invited to pay their respects on Saturday, December 7, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Bryant Funeral Home, 1228 Main Street, Honesdale, PA. A service will follow at 1:00 p.m. A graveside service will take place in spring 2025 at Green Grove Cemetery in Pleasant Mount, PA.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to one of two meaningful causes. Contributions can be sent to the Glen Ridge High School Wellness Club, c/o Jason Parseghian, 14 Ardsley Road, Glen Ridge, NJ 07028. This club, founded by Peg's grandson, reflects her passion for raising awareness about mental health and addiction—issues close to her heart. Alternatively, donations may be made to the American Stroke Association (www.stroke.org) in honor of Peg's spirit and courageous battle.
Peg's enduring legacy is one of compassion, resilience, and love. She leaves behind a world made brighter and kinder by her presence.
